Care guide
Keeping Rhodactis in a reef tank
Rhodactis mushrooms are soft, disc-shaped corals that attach loosely to rock and can detach and relocate themselves if they dislike where they are. Bounce morphs — the ones with raised, bubbled vesicles across the disc — are among the most valuable corals in the hobby and are no harder to keep than the common forms.
Lighting for Rainbow Bounce Mushroom
Low light. This genus is genuinely easy to overexpose, and a mushroom under too much intensity will shrink, pale and eventually detach to find somewhere darker. This particular frag is rated for low light — roughly 50–100 PAR, on the sand bed or under an overhang.
Water flow
Low, indirect flow. Mushrooms cannot hold position in strong current and will simply let go and travel across the tank until they find slack water. Flow for this frag should be gentle and indirect.
Placement and tank mates
Sand bed or rock ledge. Peaceful.
What to watch for
A mushroom that detaches is giving you information about its placement rather than dying — recapture it and give it a lower, shadier and calmer spot. They also propagate by pedal laceration, dropping small daughter discs from the base, which is a sign of a happy animal.
