Care guide

Keeping Duncanopsammia in a reef tank

Duncanopsammia axifuga is the only species in its genus and the only coral in this catalogue that reliably tempts a beginner into overfeeding. It branches as it adds heads, extends long tentacled polyps continuously rather than only at night, and responds to target feeding faster and more visibly than anything else on the LPS shelf.

Lighting for Duncan Coral Colony

Low to moderate light is ideal. Duncans extend long, tentacled polyps under appropriate lighting and stay stubbornly closed under too much, so a shaded lower placement usually produces better extension than a bright one. This particular frag is rated for low light — roughly 50–100 PAR, on the sand bed or under an overhang.

Water flow

Gentle to moderate flow keeps the polyps fully extended. Because the tentacles are long and soft, strong current folds them over and the colony never opens to its full size. Flow for this frag should be gentle and indirect.

Placement and tank mates

Lower rockwork. Peaceful.

What to watch for

This genus responds so strongly to feeding that it is easy to overfeed the tank while chasing head count. Target feed the coral directly rather than broadcasting into the water column, and let the nutrient numbers rather than enthusiasm set the pace.
