Care guide
Keeping Discosoma in a reef tank
Discosoma mushrooms are among the most tolerant corals sold, thriving in exactly the low-light, low-flow, higher-nutrient corners where more demanding animals struggle. They are a reliable way to populate the shaded lower third of a reef that would otherwise stay bare.
Lighting for Red Mushroom Coral
Low light. These do best in shade and under overhangs, and they will actively migrate away from bright placement given the opportunity. This particular frag is rated for low light β roughly 50β100 PAR, on the sand bed or under an overhang.
Water flow
Low flow. Like all mushrooms they detach and relocate rather than tolerate strong current, so slack corners suit them. Flow for this frag should be moderate and variable.
Placement and tank mates
Bottom of tank, low flow area. Peaceful, can sting sensitive corals if touching.
What to watch for
They spread readily by splitting and by pedal laceration, and in a nutrient-rich tank they can carpet a rock faster than expected. That is usually welcome, but they will shade and crowd out anything slower growing beneath them.
