Care guide

Keeping Euphyllia in a reef tank

Frogspawn is named for its clustered, egg-like tentacle tips. Euphyllia divisa is the most placid of the Euphyllia commonly sold and the easiest to place in a mixed reef, though 'most placid Euphyllia' still means a coral with night-time sweepers that will sting a non-Euphyllia neighbour within reach.

Lighting for Blue Tip Frogspawn

Moderate light is plenty, and this genus is easy to overdo. Under too much intensity the polyps stay tightly withdrawn and the tissue pales; under appropriate light they inflate well beyond the footprint of the skeleton. This particular frag is rated for medium light — roughly 100–200 PAR, around the middle of the rockwork.

Water flow

Gentle to moderate, indirect flow lets the polyps inflate fully. Strong direct current keeps them permanently deflated, and over time that suppressed extension shows up as stalled growth. Flow for this frag should be moderate and variable.

Placement and tank mates

Mid rockwork, away from neighbors. Semi-aggressive, sweeper tentacles.

What to watch for

Euphyllia deploy long sweeper tentacles after lights-out that reach well past their daytime footprint, so leave four to six inches to any non-Euphyllia neighbour. Brown jelly disease is the serious risk in this genus and moves fast — a colony showing it should be removed and dipped rather than watched.
