Care guide
Keeping Montipora in a reef tank
Montipora capricornis is the plating 'cap' Montipora, growing in broad whorls and vases rather than encrusting flat. It is one of the fastest-growing stony corals available and will form a substantial plate within a year, which makes placement a longer-term decision than the frag's current size suggests.
Lighting for Rainbow Monti Cap
The plate orients itself toward the light, so its eventual shape is largely decided by where you put it. A cap placed low grows upward and outward into a vase; one placed high spreads flat and horizontal, shading everything beneath it. This particular frag is rated for medium light — roughly 100–200 PAR, around the middle of the rockwork.
Water flow
Moderate, variable flow is enough. Encrusting and plating forms trap detritus on their upper surface in slack water, and a plate left in dead flow will often show tissue recession in the shaded pocket underneath. Flow for this frag should be moderate and variable.
Placement and tank mates
Mid to upper tank. Peaceful.
What to watch for
Montipora-eating nudibranchs are the specific pest for this genus. They are small, white and closely match the coral, so they are usually found by their spiral egg trails on bare skeleton. Any new Montipora should be dipped and quarantined before it goes near an established colony.
