Care guide

Keeping Acropora in a reef tank

Acropora is the most parameter-sensitive genus in the hobby, and stability matters far more than any individual number. Hold alkalinity inside a 0.2 dKH daily swing, keep calcium near 420 ppm and magnesium near 1350 ppm, and let nutrients sit low but never at zero — nitrate around 2–10 ppm and phosphate around 0.03–0.08 ppm. Bottomed-out nutrients are the usual cause of pale tissue and slow burn in an otherwise healthy tank.

Lighting for Tricolor Acropora

Acropora carries most of its colour in the tips, and those tips need real intensity to hold pigment. Move a new frag up the rockwork over two to three weeks rather than placing it at final height immediately; a sudden jump in intensity bleaches tips faster than too little light ever will. This particular frag is rated for high light — roughly 250–400 PAR, on the upper rockwork.

Water flow

Branching Acropora depends on turbulent, randomised flow to drive gas exchange between the branches and to stop detritus settling in the interior of the colony. Laminar flow pointed straight at a colony will strip tissue on the upstream side, so aim for water that swirls rather than blasts. Flow for this frag should be strong and turbulent.

What to watch for

Rapid and slow tissue necrosis (RTN/STN) can strip a colony in under a day, and is almost always downstream of an alkalinity swing. Dip new arrivals and inspect for Acropora-eating flatworms, which are nearly transparent and are usually spotted from their dark egg clusters on the base rather than the animals themselves.
